How to make a Clarified Nuclear Gimlet cocktail

From our resident mixologist, Jack at Scottish Mixology included in our Monthly Gin Club, possibly the highest strength cocktail he's ever created but you wouldn't know it when you taste it. Strane's Swedish uncut gin is an eye watering 75% ABV so he's combined it with a citrus infused New Make spirit from Annadale Distillery, some ginger wine, a spicy wee syrup and some lime juice.

However, the piece de resistance lies in a wee technique called clarification. The acidity of the lime juice, syrup and wine causes the ice cream to curdle, which isn't nice to drink.  But, if you filter it out you find it's left behind all it's lovely flavour which makes for a really tasty drink.

This cocktail takes a lot of dedication and planning but, if you stick with it, the result is truly amazing.

Strane London Dry Gin Uncut Strength hails from the small Swedish Smögen Whisky distillery, and comes in at a mouth-numbing 76%. They borrow from their whisky making tradition, creating three separate distillates with different flavour profiles, one junipery, the second citrus forward and the third more herbal. These are then blended in different ratios to create their three gins.

The gins are made with 12 botanicals (juniper, coriander, sage, lime and lemon peel, basil, mint, sweet almond, cinnamon, liquorice and two secret ingredients). The nose is dominated by the sweet strong alcohol, along with the with juniper and coriander. To taste, well yes, it's STRONG but there's also a lot of juniper, citrus and sweetness too from the coriander and the almonds. Serve it neat with ice and lemon. Sip gently though if you don't want to anaesthetise your whole mouth!

INGREDIENTS

🍸 40ml Strane Uncut Gin
🍸 30ml Citrus New Make spirit*
🍸 10ml Ginger wine
🍸 20ml lime juice
🍸 15ml Nepalernum**
🍸 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*Infuse 100ml new make spirit for 2 weeks with the peels of 2 limes, 2 lemons, 1 pink grapefruit & 2 oroblanco
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
**Infuse 500ml 2:1 sugar syrup with 25g toasted Timur berries, 1/2 inch grated ginger, zest & juice of 3 limes, 100g Toasted & blitzed almonds, 8 cloves, 1/4 star anise, 25ml overproof rum

TO MAKE

🍸 Add all ingredients to a glass jar, seal and shake to combine
🍸 Leave at room temperature for 2 days, shaking intermittently
🍸 Prime a coffee filter with hot water, discard the hot water
🍸 Now strain jar contents through same filter (can take up to 24 hours)
🍸 Reseal and place in freezer to chill
🍸 Enjoy whenever you're ready
